Pelvic Floor Therapy

Rehab Services continues to offer physical therapy evaluation and treatment for patients with challenges related to pelvic health. Physical therapy management of pelvic health has shown to be a wonderful addition to the standard treatment of patients with incontinence, enuresis, encopresis, chronic constipation, pelvic pain, and many other concerns.

Physical Therapists Whitney Bartley, PT, DPT, CAPP-Pelvic Certified, and Lindsey Baskerville, PT, DPT are currently providing services to patients with pelvic floor dysfunction in collaboration with referring providers.

Pelvic physical therapy can help with pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) or bowel and bladder issues by aiding with:

• An understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the pelvic floor muscles and how they related to bowel, bladder and pelvic dysfunction
• An understanding of how nutrition plays a role bowel, bladder, and pelvic dysfunction
• Manual techniques to improve postural/boney alignment that may affect the pelvic floor
• Strength and coordination of the pelvic floor muscle and abdominal muscles
• Exercise techniques for the pelvic floor or hip muscles that play a role in bowel and bladder function
• Techniques to address difficulty voiding or poor bladder capacity
• Urge control techniques
• Timed voiding and voiding techniques
• The use of specialized equipment (Biofeedback) to help a child learn to ‘feel’ their PFM contract and relax. This helps to improve coordination and stimulate carry-over into other activities (i.e. urge control, voiding techniques, etc.).
• The development of home programs, schedules, charts, etc.
